A Garden-Level Guest Room With Morris-Inspired Wallpaper

Most guest rooms are an afterthought: white walls, a spare bed, a stack of towels. This family wanted the opposite. Grandparents visit often, and they wanted a room that felt like it had been waiting for them.

So we added one on the garden floor of this brownstone, and we didn’t make it neutral.

Pattern on every wall

House of Hackney’s Hyacinth, made with the William Morris Gallery, covers the walls in curling leaves and flowers. Caponata, a deep brown with plum in it, covers the ceiling, doors and trim. There are no white edges to stop the pattern, so the room wraps around you instead of trying to look bigger than it is. Linen at the street-level window softens a view of old iron railings.

A guest room shouldn’t be neutral. It should feel like someone prepared it.

Collected, not matched

A nineteenth-century French commode in figured walnut burl sits beside slim contemporary side tables. A small Post-Impressionist painting of a Paris street adds one more era. Nothing matches, which is the point: the room looks gathered over time, not ordered as a set.

The things you touch

Beaded brass doorknobs, reproduced from a design made around 1900, are the first thing a guest’s hand finds. An alabaster flush mount glows overhead, and a pair of brass desk lamps keeps the light low and warm at night.

The luxury of feeling expected

It’s a new room in an old house, and it doesn’t pretend otherwise. But the pattern, the color and the antiques make it feel like it has always been there, and make whoever is staying feel expected.
